SECRETS OF SLEEP AND SEX
Quality of sleep and relationship quality are linked, researchers say

Have a rough night's sleep? Then chances are you won't have sex tonight.

Your quality of sleep is linked to the quality of your relationship, according to a new University of Arizona study.

Twenty-nine couples kept sleep diaries and recorded the quality of their interactions with their partners for a week. Men were more upbeat about their relationships after a good night's rest. When women reported negative feelings about their relationship during the day, both the women and their partners slept poorly that night.

That’s a nasty cycle: conflict leads to bad sleep, which leads to more conflict. Researchers recommend resolving problems before going to bed and avoiding difficult conversations on a day after either of you hasn't slept well.

If you don't wake up feeling refreshed, try avoiding these 14 barriers to deep sleep. Find out just how much lost shut-eye is costing your health—and then use this advice to start snoozing better.

And next time she becomes heated during a conversation, follow these 11 steps to calm her down. Not all fights are bad—here's how to resolve the toughest relationship conflicts. And you know how incredible makeup sex can be.

You bit your lip and on the tip of your tongue was your view
He hadn’t dealt with how you felt with ways that suited you.
Got paper-cuts from the love letters you never gave him
Could not meet your new found needs for misbehaving.
Why would you say sorry?
You said there was a nagging lack of smiles
When dancing on your back
Tenderness aplenty but that wasn’t what you craved
There’s holes in hearts
Desire starts to make demands
And dear boy you’d be a fool to make your plans with her
Why would you say sorry
When it’s just one of many
Bullets you will bite
While waiting for a ray of light
WHY MILK BEATS GATORADE
Grab a glass after your workout to speed recovery

After your workout, guzzle some chocolate milk. In a study at James Madison University, soccer players who downed a glass after an intense workout suffered less muscle damage from training than players who had a sports drink.

What’s milk’s advantage? Protein. The perfect amount of the nutrient is essential in any post-workout recovery meal—check out this video to see the perfect amount, and how to get it.

Of course, that’s not the only way milk, well, does a body good: It’s one of our 10 favorite surprising hydrators. If you’re looking to burn away pounds, the white stuff may also be right for your diet—here’s how milk can help torch fat. (And if you’re using dairy to lose weight, here’s why full-fat varieties may be better than skim.)

Milk’s got another advantage over sports drinks: It’s cheaper. Want to know when high-tech foods are worth the dough? Check out our Fitness Foods Face-Off to see which choices are worth the cash—Egg McMuffin or energy bar before your run? Should you have a Powerbar or a PB&J after?
SPICE UP YOUR SEX LIFE WITH FOOD
Vegetables and fruit boost your immune system—and more

Antioxidants—those marvelous molecules found in fruit and vegetables—may do more than fight off colds and prevent cancer. They can also improve the quality of your sperm, according to a Spanish study.

Researchers at the University of Murcia spent 4 years analyzing the diets of 61 men, 30 of whom had reproductive problems. They found that men who had good quality semen ate more vegetables and fruit than those with low quality semen. More vegetables and fruit means they consumed more vitamins and folic acid, and less fats, researchers say.

The scientists next plan to study how supplements affect semen quality, so for now stick with real food. Not a fan of produce? Try these tasty tricks to up your intake. If you don't mind veggies, have this filling, life-lengthening salad (including cheese and tuna), or make one of these easy gourmet meals tonight.

Eat this not That - Cereal
THIS FOOD IS BETTER THAN GATORADE
For better post-workout recovery, grab a spoon

For all the science they put into sports drinks, “G” can’t beat Special K. In a new study from the University of Texas, a bowl of whole-grain cereal with skim milk beat an electrolyte-rich sports drink for post-workout recovery.

Part of the bowl’s advantage? Protein. The cereal and milk provide around 20 grams of protein—the optimum amount for post-workout muscle growth. You’ll also down that much with this mac and cheese recipe, this salad, or a serving of these turkey meatballs.

Another cereal advantage: Fat. It provides a feeling of fullness and, like protein, takes longer to digest than a sugary sports drink. That full feeling means you’re less likely to chow down soon after your post-workout snack—and more likely to see the full fat-burning benefit of your workout.

Which breakfast cereals are best? Check out this guide to find out. And click here to see if you should be drinking a sports drink or plain old water during your next workout.

BOOST YOUR BRAIN THE EASY WAY
How daydreaming and sports make you smarter

Forget scribbling on crossword puzzles all day—some passive mental activities can fire up your neurons, as well.

A study published last week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that daydreaming can activate the problem-solving portion of your brain.

The study monitored the brain activity of people performing a routine task on a computer. Researchers noted activity in the brain’s complex problem-solving network in addition to the portion dedicated to routine mental activity. Turns out the more the participants’ minds wandered, the more active both networks were.

Daydreaming isn’t the only lazy man’s brain-booster. Watching sports can improve learning and comprehension, according to a 2008 University of Chicago study. Why? As you watch LeBron James hold court in the playoffs, your brain is trying to mimic his thought process, not just watching him idly.

Working less can also improve your mental capacity. Another study shows that clocking 55 or more hours on the job correlated with lower scores on vocabulary and reasoning tests, compared with working a 35- to 40-hour week. So rather than working overtime, take some time off and exercise your mind with these simple tips.

IS YOUR MARRIAGE DYING OF BOREDOM?
Do something wild this summer, and save your relationship

Want a happy marriage? If you’re fighting a lot,
don’t worry—that’s not the biggest warning sign. A new study says boredom is a red flag your relationship could be headed toward splitsville.

Psychologists at the State University of New York at Stony Brook interviewed 123 couples after 7 and 16 years of marriage. They were asked a series of questions about marital satisfaction and whether or not they felt stuck in a rut.

If they reported boredom at year 7, there was a good chance they’d be unhappy (and no longer intimate) at year 16. Bored spouses also had a higher tendency to divorce than those who said they found each other entertaining after 7 years.

Don’t resign yourself to a life of TV watching and early bedtimes. Step up your relationship this 3-day weekend by going on a romantic getaway, or doing something special for her at home.

Turn an ordinary date into an adventure—it
doesn’t have to be expensive or elaborate. Instead of getting buzzed at a picnic table, take her to a minor league ball game, or challenge her creative side by starting a project together.

Liven things up in the bedroom, too. Spend more time kissing her below, or help her unleash her wild side by asking if she’d like to watch a dirty movie with you—and recreate it later.

Tattoo

Do you think it's sexy?

From head to toe we saw it all, and trust us, we saw EVERYTHING. There wasn't a tattooed body part we didn't see.

Not only were the tattoos incredible to look at, many of them had touching stories behind them. Many were representing a personal rebirth while others remembered a loved one. Several were fun and whimsical while others were dark and mysterious.

START YOUR SUMMER RIGHT
Make smart use of your day off

Memorial Day means three things: Honoring our servicemen and women, having a day off, and starting your summer.

So first, fly the flag. Maybe your town has a parade—check it out. And then kick back and make the most of your extended weekend:

Be crowned king of the grill. We asked top chefs from seven major barbecue regions how you can make great-tasting food at home. Now you can impress your guests with smoky Memphis-style ribs, melt-in-your-mouth Carolina pulled pork, or down-home Texas brisket. Wash it down with one of our favorite brews.

Build something of your own. If you really want to sharpen your man skills—and earn bragging rights—build your own grill. All you need are two oil barrels and a bag of hardware to create something that’s sure to get tons of use this summer.

Enjoy your favorite foods.
A cheat meal is scientifically proven to help your muscle gains and prevent weight-loss plateaus. An added bonus: You’ll burn more fat at the gym—workouts are more effective when you eat. Just don’t confuse
;cheat meal”
with “cheat day.”

Fit in a fat-burning workout.
Stoke your metabolism with a fast-paced bodyweight workout—like the Belly Off! No-Gym Classic workout. Or get your blood pumping with a jump rope. Ten minutes of jumping rope can provide the same calorie burn as 30 minutes of running. It uses all of your muscles and joints, which means less fat and more muscle everywhere.

WORK OFF YOUR BINGE
The holiday was a great reason to cheat; here is how to get back on track

We hope you celebrated yesterday—we sure did. If you overdid it at a barbecue (again: we did), here is how you can burn off your binge.

If you had a serious cheeseburger—huge patty, gobs of cheese—you may have downed as many as 1,500 calories. You’d have to run 11 miles to burn it off. A better solution: Switch from your long, slow run for this cardio training program to burn more calories faster. And for your next burger, try this fat-burning favorite from the Belly Off! Challenge.

Washed down your burger with a few beers? Gut-growing calories can hide inside a six-pack (ironically, covering your six-pack with dangerous belly fat). Don’t give up beer completely—use this guide to find great-tasting, lower-calorie alternatives for your next cookout.

If you finished the day with ice cream, don’t fret—dairy is one of the 12 power foods that can help you burn fat. And every diet can use a cheat meal. (Even cheat meals can be improved—check out our guide to smarter dessert choices.)
